There is an excellent article written by adventurer Mathew Karsten detailing his crossing of the Caminito del Rey over at The Expert Vagabond. It’s well worth a read and the images along with the article are quite amazing. His video is spectacular (and no, he’s not wearing flip flops 🙂 )
Quite frankly, the helicopter in this video transporting materials for the restoration is very, very close to the wall of the mountain. The pilot is daring indeed. The faces on some of the politicians “inspecting” the work are pictures of fear. :)… Take a look at the video and you get an idea of what it must have been like over 100 years ago constructing this aerial walkway without the use of helicopters and other modern technology….
Von Ryan’s Express Starring Frank Sinatra and a host of film stars of the day achieved this films success using (at the time) state of the art special affects using aeroplanes, trains and tanks. It was shot on location around Northern Italy in Cortina d’Ampezzo and Firenze Santa Maria Novella railway station in Florence. But the railway sequence at the film’s conclusion was filmed in the limestone gorge of El Chorro and the area around the Camino del Rey. The voice over for the trailer just makes you want to get out to the cinema!
