Caminito del Rey Tour Overview
Re -opened to great delight and global publicity in March 2015 the Caminito del Rey has rapidly become a must visit for visitors and locals alike. Once labeled as the “World’s Most Dangerous Walkway” the Caminito del Rey has become somewhat gentler after its restoration but it still remains an unforgettable walk in in beautiful mountain scenery and offers visitors stunning and dramatic views as well as still a few cliff-hanging moments. Clinging to the cliff face of the Gaitanes Gorge, a 100 dizzying metres above the Guadalhorce River below, the Caminito del Rey was originally built between 1901 and 1905 to allow workers at nearby power plants to cross between them, transport materials and allow inspections.
The new pathway has been constructed to follow closely the route and features of the old pathway, providing walkers with spectacular views and allowing the complete enjoyment of the remarkable surrounding scenery and history. The beautiful waters of the nearby reservoirs provide a cooling a spot after the walk to take a swim in their blue waters. The nearby restaurant “El Mirador” also makes a perfect spot with its sweeping views of the lakes for us to enjoy some traditional local dishes before the journey home.
Caminito del Rey tickets, your own private, experienced guide and door to door pick up and drop off from the Costa del Sol have made the Caminito del Rey tour one of our most popular excursions! Itinerary Unless otherwise requested during booking, we always aim for the 10:00am slot to start the walk of the Caminito. We aim to arrive at the parking area (as close as cars can get!) at 0930 where a short 15 minute walk sees us arrive at the control point where we are equipped with hard hats and admitted onto the walkways. Depending on your location pickup would normally be around 0800 as the Caminito is approx. a 75 minute drive from most of the Costa del Sol.
The walk normally takes around two and half hours, although our guide will always walk at your pace and you can stop to rest, take pictures or simply marvel as much as you like and there is no time limit. The walk itself is approx. 7.5km and is mainly flat for its duration. There is approx. 2.9km of walking on the wooden walkway and the rest walking either through the valley in the middle or the approaches to the start and exit.
After we exit the Caminito we will arrive at the official Caminito shuttle buses, which will take us on a 15 minute drive back to our waiting vehicle. From here if desired and weather permits we can go for swim in the nearby lakes. Accessed from a nearby campsite with changing facilities, a refreshing dip in the blue waters is a wonderful way to wash off the trail! After a swim and also, only if desired, we can have lunch at the nearby El Mirador Restaurant, with delicious local, country style food which is tasty and reasonably priced (lunch not included in tour price) and with panoramic views of the lakes below.
Caminito del Rey tickets need to be booked as far in advance as possible. The Caminito is closed on Mondays and weekends are generally sold out weeks in advance, especially in the busy summer months.
Please note the Caminito del Rey prohibits the flip-flops, walking sticks and selfie sticks.
